i was thinking of rng stuff. in terms of difficulty more about faked rng. but that just comes back to cheating ai. and i don't know what i should think about x-com and games alike, which decreases your hit chance on higher difficulty, when every important shot becomes a gamble. and in general the frustration if your turn gets wasted because of missing.

The higher difficulties for Civilisation VI just make everything faster for the AI. Strong units start showing up way before anyone could legitimately get them and it's basically impossible to get ahead on research. I don't understand how anyone can find it fun. They're always considerably ahead of you no matter how well you play.

Ultimate vault hunter is meant to be the 4 player coop mode, it pre scaled to 4 player difficulty while other difficulties would get harder the more players you had, so if you're alone it sucks, I agree.

There’s me with my borderlands 2 op10 commando glitchless solo. I found it fun and it changes up how you need to play. Slag is a necessity because it allows 3x damage. You really need to watch your whole loadout or you will get murked but with the right setup you can still fuck shit up

I played a 2ds puzzle mystery game where there was a drawing notebook that they wanted you to do something with (I think they wanted you to take a charcoal rubbing of the page), but the controls or something didn't work with it. This game was one of those made to show off the new bells and whistles on a platform. So I spent hours if not days going back to this game trying everything, blowing on the mic, rubbing the screen I mean everything! and I just gave up as nothing worked. I went back to it a couple years later and got it first try, and it was something I am damn sure I tried. I think it was either just buggy or finicky, but I just don't know.

The AI cheating, even when it’s being played player v player in any FIFA game after say, 12, is insanely infuriating. Games are literally fixed (dynamic difficulty) to try and keep the scores tight.

One example of a game changing up layouts and such on harder difficulties is Resident Evil 7. Madhouse mode unlocks after you beat the game and it makes late game enemies show up earlier in the game, changes the locations of items, make characters such as Jack Backer extremely fast on top of him showing up outside of scripted sequences, which didn't happen in normal or easy mode. Some enemy spawn locations are also changed where they don't spawn there, their spawn location is changed completely, or a different enemy spawns there. It's amazing.

Twisted Metal 2 did that Easy mode thing. After beating the first boss, Minion, a stop sign shows up and tells you to play on Normal or Hard. I didn't know about the Max Payne thing. No wonder the game got so hard at times.

I actually HATE escort missions and stealth sections and puzzles with only one super specific solution that will not be readily apparent until a significant amount of time has passed. What is so terrible about those things is that they CAN be implemented in a way that is both well done and very satisfying as a result. Take "A plague's tale" for example. It puts together EVERYTHING everyone hates about games and it does it in a way to where it is so well done, it changes the way you think about these things in general. If you havent played that game, you're wasting time. Buy it, download it now and play it. The point is, that you can take aspects of bad tropes and implement them in a way that is awe inspiring.

imo, as an example i will use 2 games, dark souls and resident evil for dark souls i will compare the dark souls series to each other: so i felt that in the first dark souls the bonfires were a bit spaced out and the warping between bonfires was limited (cant teleport to every bonfire) which I prefered compared to dark souls 2 and 3, it made you dread dying sometimes which lead to it being a little more challenging while not being frustrating. at least imo. and for resident evil, I will compare the resident evil 2 remake difficulties to each other and to the original: as a short example, the normal mode in resident evil 2 remake has the type writer to save progress and you have an unlimited number of times you can save your progress, as well as checkpoint system in case you die it will reload you to a close checkpoint to where you died. but in the hardcore difficulty there is no checkpoint system and in case you die the game will reload you to your last save, and to use the type writer you need ink ribbons which means you have a limited number of saves per run. the hardcore difficulty is very close to the original in terms of save mechanics and reloading and imo I feel that its the way the game was meant to be played, thats why i hate games that make you choose a difficulty but I also understand why its important, not everyone is looking for a challenge and some people are just there to complete the game even if there was none.

More of a technical quirk, but the last race in the original Burnout has you bogged down by traffic while the AI can get far enough ahead where nothing spawns. They never had to slow down as a result.

You kinda failed to mention Sonic Boom: The Rise of Lyric. The bugs and glitches in that game are on par if not WORSE than Sonic 06's bugs. I mean theres walls that Sonic Team failed to make solid so you could just clip thru and skip entire parts of levels among many other bugs and glitches that would make the game unnecessarily difficult.

Also, not having the option of choosing difficulty settings in some games can be frustrating. Demon's Soul and dark souls is not made to be fun, it's made to be tedious and frustrating, if the game is permanently set on very hard, with no option to set the mode to a more sane level for those of us that don't have infinite time and patience. And games where you're not told what to do and the environment is intentionally made to confuse and slow you down.

Majora's mask has Inverted SOng of Time, play Song of Time backwards and it slows the clock down to 1/2 speed, so...makes stuff a LOT easier. Also soem of us aren't "cognitively disabled" but have SLOW REFLEXES or just don't have the freaking fast twitch-memory/reflexes some of these damn games demand

Hard modes in RPGs are especially poorly balanced. Heavy armor becomes as good as light armor while limiting mobility, light armor becomes worthless and no armor is always forced to be a glass cannon. I'm sure most RPG enthusiasts have dealt with the annoyances of having the designated tank getting one-shot by the poorly balanced boss. (Or in rare occasions the common enemies)

no. 4 yes, there are certain puzzles that just don't give enough info(or even none at all) or have very obscure clues on how to solve them but to be fair, I've watched my fair share of youtube let's plays over the past decade so I've also seen PLENTY of players that can't solve even basic puzzles and would quickly devolve into brute forcing and/or blaming the puzzle for being dumb which can be both fun and frustrating to watch. so my take on this is whether a puzzle can be regarded as good or bad mostly depends if the player is smooth brain or otherwise. no. 3 I don't really see these as cutting content for easy mode but bonus content for those that play the game in their intended difficulty/ies and I'm in favor of it as it is incentive for playing the harder difficulties afterwards if you played on easy first which is also a plus on a game's replay value. you just said in no. 10 that basically higher difficulty = higher numbers is bad/lazy, so here we have higher difficulty = more content instead which is as you say more "interesting" rather than simply increasing the enemy stats. also if all games are as inclusive as the most casual of players want it to be, then everything would just end up in game journalist mode. and no, you can't use the disabled as an excuse as they're certainly not even the intended target audience of most games and catering to every kind of disability under the sun because "muh inclusivity" would just make game development much more needlessly complicated than it already is. no. 1 I find it kinda funny that you chose auto charge moves in fighting games rather than the much more unfair input reading which is prominent mostly in older entries. when ai instantly reacts to every input you press, doesn't even matter if they're 50/50 cross/mix ups, you can never hit the ai if it won't let you so whether you win or lose depends on the ai(unless you find a consistent ai exploit).

You didn't mention the main problem with Borderlands. You have to backtrack the whole game two or three times to have a decent difficulty. I played BL 2 with the difficulty slider mod and only in UVHM I lowered the values from four to a two player team. But it also means that casual player never will max out their character and good players have to repete the game two times to get a a good difficulty. It meant that I've backuped saves for each character on start of UVHM or even started to construct saves with a savegame editor. In BL3 they implemented Mayhem mode. These are modes with scaled values(increased enemy stats(200%, 400%, 600%... WTF!), better loot) but have always some weird gimmicks in it that no real player wants.

One of my biggest issues with the total war series is, the AI doesn't get better, or learn you tactics, they just get endless buffs as you scale the difficulty up. Playing on normal is the most 'fair' in all honesty, as you don't have AI too dumb to even recruit units, but you aren't so bogged down by stupid buffs.
